Mountaineers scoop half price train tickets

Are you planning on a winter hill walking trip? Or perhaps you are hoping to get away for a few days in January to experience Scotland’s mountains in the snow, whether on foot, bike or skis. If so, then it could pay to become a member of the Mountaineering Council of Scotland.

From January 2 to March 31, MCofS members can enjoy a 50% discount on tickets from ScotRail for journeys on the Highland lines.

The 50% discount offer is available on the following routes (including intermediate stations):
*  Fort William to Mallaig
*  Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh
*  Inverness to Wick/Thurso

MCofS Chief Officer David Gibson said: “Our members are always keen on a bargain and thanks to ScotRail they now have the chance to use the train for a trip to the hills, or simply to enjoy the spectacle of some of Scotland’s finest mountain landscapes in winter conditions.  Either way, it’s a great offer not to be missed.”

A delighted Mike Dales, who is MCofS Membership Development Officer, said: “Unlike the rest of the human population, mountaineers tend not to hibernate in winter.  We are a group of people that travel around in search of snow-covered mountains, so it is great news that we can travel by train this winter and enjoy a generous discount from ScotRail.”

Prices for membership are £27.30 for the year. There are concession rates and also prices for couples and families. New members joining by direct debit will receive a 50% discount on the annual fees. There are numerous benefits and discounts for members.
