New thrills: Bungee jumping at night

Written by Fiona October 28 2011

Bungee jumping would be enough of a thrill for most people, but now a Scottish outdoors company is launching a bungee jump at night. According to Highland Fling Bungee, the Hallowe’en  Night Bungee Jump event is the first of a its kind in Europe.

Scottish first: Night-time bungee test jump

On Saturday (Oct 29) dozens of adrenaline seekers will hurl themselves 155ft off Garry Bridge in Perthshire, plummeting at 50 mph towards the River Garry in pitch blackness.

While black-out jumps have been operated successfully at sites in New Zealand and South Africa, this is the first time a pitch-black outdoors bungee jump event will be held in Europe. Thanks to glow sticks, spectators will be able to see the jumpers as they make their bonkers descent.

Highland Fling Bungee is Britain’s first all-year-round bridge bungee jumping operator and since the company opened its platform in May in the Pass of Killiecrankie, 3800 jumpers from four continents have taken the plunge. Last weekend, a 74-year-old man from Girvan jumped 40 metres, while the youngest participant jumped on his 14th birthday.

The company will run night jumps twice a month until March 2012. Director John Mason-Strang said: “We know that one-off night jumps have been done in indoor settings before but this is virgin territory for Europe and we wanted to break new ground.

“It takes the extreme element of bungee jumping to a different level. There is no more terrifying an experience than abandoning all self-control and plunging into blackness.”
