Why cycling to work could make you fitter after just a week
It seems that people who swap their car for a bicycle could reap health benefits ion just a week. Not only is a bicycle an environmentally friendly way to get to the office, but it’s one of the easiest, quickest ways to get healthy.
A healthier heart
Several Purdue University studies suggest that if you cycle regularly you reduce the risk of heart disease by as much as 50 per cent. Frequent riding also strengthens your entire cardiovascular system, so it boosts your lung performance, too. That means you’ll have more stamina for exercise.
Cycle regularly and at a brisk pace and you will see cardiovascular benefits as well as weight loss. Add in some hills and the benefits are greater.
Burn fat for longer
Burning fat is different from shedding pounds. Biking significantly affects your metabolic rate. It’s an efficient exercise that burns fat and calories and even after the ride, your body keeps burning fat.
Even if you’re feeling tired, a 30-minute bike ride will leave you feeling exhilarated and energetic. Try it and see! Hop on your bike, ride to work, and by the time you arrive at the office, you’ll have energy to spare. Not only that, but it will last throughout the day, saving you from midday fatigue or burnout. The best part is that you’ll sleep like a baby each night.
Improved eating habits
There’s something about regular exercise that just makes you want to eat better. Often, it’s not even a wholly conscious choice. Your body simply starts craving the fuel it needs to keep going each day. As a result, you’ll find yourself eating lots of lean protein, green, leafy vegetables and fresh fruits. One week of healthy food and you’ll start looking fit.
So why not ditch your car, at least for a week and see what happens? Then continue for 30 days to make cycling a healthy habit.
