Don’t miss fast and furious Tweedlove bike race

Written by Fiona May 30 2011

I’m loving the sound of this evening showcase road cycling event that will take place as part of the Tweedlove Bike Week, June 11 to 19. Called The Peebles Sprint, the event is a Belgian style “kermesse” town centre evening road cycling race taking place on June 14.

The Peebles Sprint will see 40 riders battle it out at high speeds over a number of laps of a half-mile, fast and furious course (1 min 30 seconds per lap) in the town centre for almost an hour for pride of place on the first Peebles Sprint podium.

There is a strong line-up of Elite amateur road cyclists already set to race the event that starts at 7.15pm. Some 40 riders will be made up of four-man teams from leading Scottish Clubs – Team Endura, Dooleys Cycles,The Bicycleworks, Velocity44, Leslie Bikes, Edinburgh Road Club, Musselburgh Road Cycle Club, Team Young Renners, Peebles Cycle Club and the Scottish Mountain Bike squad.

Team tactics will be the order of the evening as the riders jostle for the best positions throughout the race.  The teams will also work for and against each other to wind up the pace.  This will be guaranteed to produce some spectacular super-fast sprint action along Peebles High Street.

To make the action even more thrilling lapped riders will be taken off the circuit, keeping the course clear for the faster front-runners to continue to pick up the pace.

This promises to be a great event for spectators and it’s expected that crowds of families will be there, especially as the evening race is  preceded by an open family ride of the full race circuit at 18:30, where everyone will be welcome to bring along their bikes and ride the course to get a real feel of what the Elite will have to contend with.

* TweedLove bike week, in association with Endura, has a packed programme of free and paid events being staged throughout the cycle friendly Tweed Valley.
