Sign up for Scotland’s newest duathlon
A new duathlon event for Scotland is taking place on July 18, 2015, in the Cairngorm National Park. The Highlander “Escape the Redcoats” follows a figure-of-eight course, comprising a 39-mile road cycle and a nine-mile run.
The Highlander combines a challenging course with fantastic scenery as entrants pass through Scottish glens and estates with a transition at an historic Highland castle.
The event organiser, Douglas Bulmer, says: “Uniting our love of running and cycling with the beautiful scenery around our home town seemed like the perfect recipe for a memorable event.
“We believe this event offers a unique experience, where entrants can follow in the footsteps of the Highlanders as they escaped the redcoats through the glens and estates of the Scottish Highlands.”
Douglas added “We have worked hard to keep the event as flat as possible while maximising the stunning scenery of the area.”
The Highlander starts and finishes at the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore and there will be free entry to entrants’ friends and family. Here they can cheer on competitors while watching battle re-enactments and observing Highland life as it was in times gone by.
Highland-based lifesaving organisation, Lucky 2B Here, has been chosen as the charity that the event will support.
Scott MacDonald, who is also involved in the organising of the event said: ‘We are delighted to support this local charity, which aims to provide defibrillators in rural areas and train local people to use them.
“Raising money for this great cause, while promoting the local area is something we have wanted to do for a long time so we are really excited to announce the date for this event.”
