Pro cyclists join Etape Suisse Davos

I have just returned from a preview ride of a new Etape Suisse Gstaad sportive. The same luxury sportive company also organises an exclusive three-day festival of cycling and fine dining in the Swiss Alps at Davos. Etape Suisse Davos 2015 takes place from September 10 to 13.

Joining the trip will be owner and manager of Wiggle-Honda, Rochelle Gilmour, and former Australian racing professional, Cadel Evans.

Gilmore is also an Australian racing cyclist who lives in Italy. In 2006, she won a stage at the Geelong Women’s Tour, took second in the Commonwealth Games points race (behind teammate Kate Bates) and earned top five finishes in a Giro d’Italia Femminile stage, the Geelong World Cup and the Liberty Classic. In the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, Rochelle won gold in the 112km road bicycle racing event.

Evans won the 2011 Tour de France with the BMC Racing team. A former champion mountain biker, he switched to full-time road cycling in 2001. Cadel is a four-time Olympian and was the first Australian to win the UCI ProTour (2007) and the UCI Road World Championships (2009).

What is the Etape Suisse Davo sportive?

Davos is Europe’s highest city and is surrounded by stunning scenery. Riders taking part in the Etape Suisse Davos 2015 blue riband event will stay at the luxurious Intercontinental Hotel.

On arrival, riders (and their non-riding partners) are greeted at a Champagne reception before being fitted for a BMC carbon bike or a power assisted Stromer e-bike by fitting specialists, CycleFit. Over the following days, they enjoy guided rides around Davos, a choice of cycling challenges, a Michelin-starred lunch and full mechanical support. Complimentary sports massages will also be available at a post-ride spa party.

The event concludes with a charity gala dinner, including an auction and award ceremony, in support of Laureus Sports for Good Foundation.

Looking ahead to Davos 2015, Sara Tye, CEO of Etape Suisse, said: “With breathtaking scenery and super-smooth road surfaces, this three-day event provides the perfect break for anyone who enjoys cycling.

“The accommodation and food will be second to none and the networking opportunities at the highest level. We’ll also be raising money for an extraordinary charity in Laureus Sports Foundation for Good.

“We recommend early bookings as places are limited and, following last year’s event, in great demand.”
