Celebrating a Day of Happiness

Written by Fiona

March 03 2016

Did you know that March 20 is the International Day of Happiness? The campaign is a global celebration to mark the United Nations International Day of Happiness. It is coordinated by Action for Happiness, a non-profit movement of people from 160 countries, supported by a partnership of like-minded organisations.

In 2011, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution that recognised happiness as a “fundamental human goal”. It called for “a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes the happiness and well-being of all peoples”.

But do we know how to be happier? Do we care if others are happy round us? Apparently there are 10 keys to happier living. I like this idea.

Using the acronym GREAT DREAM:

Giving: Do things for other people

Relating: Connect with other people

Exercising: Take care of your body

Awareness: Live life mindfully

Trying out: Keep learning new things

Direction: Have goals to look forward to

Resilience: Find ways to bounce back

Emotions: Look for what’s good

Acceptance: Be comfortable with who you are

Meaning: Be a part of something bigger.
