The best last-minute ski destinations
Think you’ve left it too late for a ski break? Think again. There are a number of great resorts that are still worth visiting as we enter Spring. Not only is this the opportune time to avoid the crowds, but you might even save yourself some money, too. Here are some of the best last-minute destinations.
Val Thorens, France
Situated in the French Alps, Val Thorens is the highest resort in Europe and one of the top choices from experts like Columbus Direct. Christmas and New Year are by far the busiest period and February is also popular, especially when the school holidays are in full flow. Yet, while March and April typically see a decline in the number of visitors, the pistes are usually still covered in snow. This means you’ll have more time to spend on the slopes, and you can also expect to make major savings as hotels cut their prices for the end-of-season sales.
Located on the border with Norway and just 200km above the Arctic Circle, Riksgransen, Sweden, is one of northernmost skiing resorts in the world. Unlike other locations, here the best conditions are found during the later months of the year, with the main ski season running from May to June. Since we’re deep in the land of the Midnight Sun, the days barely get dark in the summer so you might be surprised how late you end up staying on the slopes. While you’re here, be sure to check out the Northern Lights, an incredible light display best seen in this part of the world.
Don’t think that you’re options are limited to Europe either. You can still find great spots in the USA this time of year and Mammoth, California, may just be the best one around. It’s higher than other nearby spots at 2,425m and, thanks to its army of snow guns, it retains a good base during the Spring season. The resort is in full swing during March and the first weeks of April, while the number of visitors start to decline as we enter May.
Whether you’re an expert skier looking for a challenge or newbie looking to learn the basics, there’s sure to be a last-minute destination that appeals.
