I have been testing the “new and improved” Beet It Sport Beetroot Flapjack.

Features:

  • 40g bar
  • All-natural ingredients: Beetroot concentrate, oats and raisins.
  • Smaller, more manageable size of xx
  • 200mg of natural dietary nitrate
  • 24g of carbohydrate
  • Oat flakes (53%), concentrated beetroot juice (27%), raisins, concentrated apple juice extract and sunflower oil
  • No preservatives, additives or artificial flavours
  • Suitable for vegetarians and vegans, GMO free and dairy free
  • £1.85

The claims:

The nitrate is scientifically proven to improve exercise performance by reducing the amount of oxygen the body needs to maintain a set intensity of exercise.

The oats provide 24g of carbohydrate for dual-fatigue prevention, helping you stay fuelled up throughout exercise.

Research from more than 200 universities worldwide use Beet It Sport products to investigate the benefits of natural dietary nitrate supplementation.

Published work shows the nitrate interacts with enzymes in saliva to boost Nitric Oxide levels in the blood. This natural vasodilator increases blood flow and oxygen supply to muscles with a beneficial impact on strength, endurance and recovery.

My thoughts: BEET IT SPORT Beetroot flapjack

I like beetroot although I know many people do not. To me the bar tastes sweeter than beetroot although there is an aftertaste of beetroot. I presume the sweetness comes form the apple juice. You’ll probably either like it or hate it. I think the taste is ok.

The bar has the consistency of a moist, slightly loose and light flapjack. It’s easy to eat, even when doing sport.

It’s reassuring to know the bar is made of natural ingredients, is vegan-friendly and has no preservatives, additives or artificial flavours.

There are 154 calories per bar. This is quite high for a snack but if you are taking part in energetic sports you will need these calories.

The beetroot snack leaves your mouth very purple! A friend asked me if my mouth was bleeding when I smiled at them after eating on of the snacks! Beetroot does that!

I do not tend to eat snacks while running other than jelly babies so I used the Beet It! sports bar while cycling. In fact, I had four of them on one longer ride. It did seem to keep me feeling energised.

The bars were easy enough on my stomach although they did taste a bit too sweet by the end of the ride. I usually crave savoury after a few hours on the bike.

I have no idea if the nitrate helped to improve my performance. This sort of thing would need to be measured scientifically. I guess you have to trust the research on this.

The bars are easy to stow in a back pocket or somewhere in a rucksack. They are pricey at £1.85 per bar though. You can reduce the cost per bar by buying a box of 24. Each bar is £1.12.

If you are looking for a natural sports bar rather than one packed with artificial ingredients then this might well be a good choice. Try one first to see if you like it before committing to a box.

See Beet It.
