How to choose the best RV mattress

If you are the type of person who loves an adventure then the chances are you’ve thought about a motorhome or recreational vehicle (RV). New RVs typically come with mattresses but they are not known to be the most comfortable. If you plan on spending a lot of time in your RV then you might want to think about replacing the mattress.

There is also the situation where you may have purchased a second-hand RV and want to replace the mattress so you aren’t sleeping on a used one. With lots of information on this site about travel, my guest writer is keen to offers some tips about the right RV mattress for you.

How active are you?

How often do you plan to use your RV? Once a year or twice a year? Then you may not need to invest a great deal into an RV mattress. A top cover might do the trick. But if you are planning to hit the road more frequently, or for an extended trip,  you might want to check out this review of RV mattresses by The Sleep Buffs.

Types of RVs

All in all there are about seven types of RVs on the market. There are class A, which are the gigantic ones with the driving cab inside the recreational area. We’ve seen them on road trips while wondering how the driver made it around that switchback.

Then there is class B, which also has a driving cab easily accessible to the living area. This type is smaller and less expensive than their massive counterparts.

Class C campers are the type with the living section in the back but you have to step out of it to get into the driving cab. All the others are ones that are pulled by a truck or another vehicle.

No matter what type you are considering buying or if you are just trying to upgrade the one you already have, all of these RVs need mattresses to sleep on.

Types of RV Mattresses

Certain types of RV mattresses can’t be removed. If this is the case then you might want to consider just purchasing an excellent mattress topper. If you have a pull out couch for the bed in your camper then replacing the mattress might not be an option.

We also suggest the mattress topper but don’t leave the topper on when you are folding up the bed. This could cause damage to your topper or your sofa bed. Remove it and place it somewhere else until it needs to be used again.

If you are able to remove and replace the mattress in your RV then you should take a look at it. Have any of the corners been rounded off to make more room for a bathroom or storage? If so, then you are going to need a specialty mattress and those can cost quite a bit.

This is an area where you might want to consider a mattress topper as well. Of course, if money’s no object then by all means, get the custom made memory foam, which is the best for both traveling and comfort.

What To Look Out For

There are several things to consider when replacing the mattress in your RV.

Will It Fit?

Before you just run out and buy something you know will remind you of your bed at home, make sure that installing it into your RV won’t be a problem. Some of the smaller models are built around the sleeping quarters simply because the mattresses are too big to fit in the door. Sometimes a new mattress has to be sliced in half to install, which would work much better on a memory foam than an innerspring.

Not All Mattresses Will Fit

Some mattresses in RVs are altered to meet the accommodation needs in the camper. As we’ve mentioned, corners can be rounded or completed cut off. Even though they are labeled as king and queen, not all the queens in campers are the same size. To be on the safe side measure the area and the old mattress before you go shopping.

Air Mattresses Are A Great Option

If buying an expensive memory foam mattress only to have it cut in half doesn’t sound like an option for you then you might want to consider an air mattress. There are several different brands and styles on the market. Some even come with the option of blowing up separate sides to meet the needs of two different sleepers.

Do Your Homework

Most importantly, know what you want and decide via investigation and reading reviews like the one we mentioned from The Sleep Buffs above what option would best meet your needs. You have already begun the work by reading this article. The rest is up to you.
