10 Good Reasons to Go for a Walk

Written by Fiona

December 04 2017

The pure and simple pleasure derived from going out for a walk is such that it requires no further justification, says my guest writer Mary Anne Malleret. But should there be any doubt, a new book gives us 10 reasons to go for a walk and each is as convincing as the next.

Learning to walk is the primary occupation of the early years of our existence; thereafter it becomes an automatic and intrinsic part of what makes us human.

But, take a step back and look again to discover that walking also has the power to make us better: Healthier in body, mind and spirit; fitter; brighter; better at making the right decision; better disposed towards our fellow man; happier; and even better looking.

Stop for a moment more and discover that the virtues of walking also benefit our society at large. Indeed, there are probably a thousand good reasons to go for a walk. Here are some to be going on with.

A new book tells us all why we should be walking more.

10 Good Reasons to Go for a Walk

  1. It’s good for the body.
  2. It’s good for the brain.
  3. It’s good for the mind.
  4. It’s good for decision-making.
  5. It’s good for coping with an accelerating world.
  6. It’s good for equality.
  7. It’s good for the economy.
  8. It’s good for the environment.
  9. It’s so good it’s going to be made compulsory.
  10. It’s a must – say writers and philosophers.

Some influential opinion makers from diverse walks of life have endorsed Ten Good Reasons to Go for a Walk written by Thierry and Mary Anne Malleret.

Walk higher.

Walking is the best medicine

Over two thousand years ago, Hippocrates told us that walking was the best medicine. Today, the Mallerets have provided us with an elegant and simplified explanation of the value of walking to become a healthier you! – Richard Carmona, 17th Surgeon General of The United States, Distinguished Professor University of Arizona.

Endless benefits of walking

The benefits of walking are seemingly endless. As the Mallerets show, we don’t just feel better when we walk, we think better, too. Using science along with compelling stories of famous walkers throughout history, Ten Good Reasons to Go for a Walk will get you off the couch to better navigate our stress-filled world – Arianna Huffington, Founder and CEO, Thrive Global, USA.

Walking is vital

Thierry and Mary Anne are absolutely right. Walking is vital. The scientific evidence is clear. You can do it for exercise without thinking. Even better you can do it mindfully – Professor Lord Layard, Director, Well-Being Program, Centre for Economic Performance, London School of Economics, UK.

Walk tarmac or trails or wherever you fancy.

Author biographies

Thierry studied in Paris and Oxford and holds a PHD in Economics. His career spanning government, academia and finance (with the publication of four thrillers on the side) has taken him all over the world from the Caucasian mountains via Davos (he was in charge for several years of the World Economic Forum annual meeting) to the slopes of Chamonix.

From the latter he now runs, with Mary Anne, his own advisory/investment boutique The Monthly Barometer – perhaps the only one of its kind to offer clients the opportunity to work while walking, climbing or ski touring.

Mary Anne, following a history degree from the University of Oxford, worked in the commercial art world in London, Paris and New York, before joining the Private Office of HRH The Prince of Wales.

Since moving to the French Alps the passions and pre-occupations she now shares with Thierry include their four daughters, walking and the Monthly Barometer, of which she is a director.
