Push the Boat Out at 50 Scottish clubs and centres in 2018

A record 50 clubs and training centres across Scotland are getting ready to Push the Boat Out again. The annual RYA campaign encourages people to try sailing and windsurfing at one of numerous open day events held throughout May.

Over the past five years, the number of participating Push the Boat Out locations has increased annually. Last year, 42 clubs got involved in the campaign.

Participating clubs and centres range from as far afield as Orkney Sailing Club to inland venues such as Annandale Sailing Club near Lockerbie.

Skye Sailing Club is hosting the furthest west event, while Rosehearty Boat Club the most easterly.

Each event is different and there is something for everyone, from families and children to young professionals, couples and retirees. The taster sessions are free or low cost.

Getting more people on the water

New research by the RYA shows that a quarter of people have never tried an outdoor pursuit, yet two in four want to be more active and nearly a third want to get more fresh air.

Push the Boat Out in May could be your opportunity to be more active outdoors.

Angie Fraser at Aberdeenshire Sailing Trust is helping to coordinate three venues in the north east, Aberdeen and Stonehaven Yacht Club, Peterhead Sailing Club and Knockburn Sports Loch.

She said: “Knockburn Loch is a really great venue for families and we’re looking forward to getting everyone afloat, from children to seniors. We’re hoping lots of people will come along to have a go sailing and find out what all the fun is about.”

Duncan Heather from Dundee Sailing Club, which won the RYA Scotland Club of the Year, believes there are many benefits to sailing. He added: “Dinghy sailing is an affordable way to relax, learn new skills and make new friends, while enjoying a beautiful natural environment among the dolphins on the Tay Estuary.

“We offer a friendly, supportive environment to all newcomers wanting to give sailing a try. We will have free taster sails at all mid-week club events in May and at our dedicated Push the Boat Out event on Saturday May 12.”

Liza Linton, RYA Scotland Development Manager, said that a whole month of Push The Boat Out events means even more people can get on the water in 2018.

She said: “Sailing is such an accessible sport and many people aren’t aware of the opportunities available close to them or how affordable the sport can be. Push the Boat Out is all about making that connection.”
