Book review: Walking Scotland’s Lost Railways
Scotland still has hundreds of miles of dismantled railways, which offer great scope for easy-going walks. A new book, Walking Scotland’s Lost Railways: Track Beds Rediscovered by Robin Howie (author) and John McGregor offers a guide to many dozens of these walks.
The book offers an insight into the Scottish railway history and then reveals a long list of short walks, including descriptions and maps. There are plenty of photos, too, with many showcasing what the railway system once looked like.
The walks are divided into regions – South Central Highlands , Fife and the Borders – with numerous short walks in each.
It’s an attractive and descriptive book with enough walking – 375 miles to be exact! – to keep you going for years.
