Video: The Cobbler (Ben Arthur) in the Arrochar Alps
The Cobbler is one of the most famous mountains in a list known as the Corbetts (Scottish mountains with a summit of between 2500ft and 3000ft). It is located in the Arrochar Alps, within an hour’s drive of Glasgow. The return outing is about 11km (7 miles) and the summit is 884m (2900ft).
To avoid the crowds, I headed there for a walk-run with friends one Friday evening. After 6pm, the car park is also free. It was a beautiful summer’s day and, for the first time, I also Threaded the Needle at the top.
Threading the Needle means to go through a triangle of rocks at the top of the mountain and then climb round and up to the very summit.
I am not sure why I have not done this before but I thought it would be too scary and exposed. It is quite scary and exposed but it was fine in the end. This is thanks to the patient guidance of my friend Beardy.
