i gave the Nikwax wash products you mentioned above a go for my trusty old, but cared for, Phoenix gore-tex jacket

On a very wet day in The Lakes it performed ok – not brilliantly – and on the second outting on a a showery day on Dartmoor, it seems to be almost back to how it was before it was washed and reproofed.

I have to say I am a little disappointed with the Nikwax product performance. It may have been me and something I’ve not done correctluy, but I did follow the instructions to the letter.

I have also used Nikwax products and can only describe them as utter garbage.
Following the instructions to the letter you end up with highly waterproof clothing for about two weeks. After that you are back where you started. Not worth the expense or effort.

Following your comment I wrote to Nikwax for a comment. This is their reply: “Nikwax is sorry that you are dissatisfied. We take product testing very seriously as we do not use harmful chemicals so strive to ensure that our environmental alternative is superior to other, less environmentally friendly products on the market. Our award-winning solutions have been thoroughly tested and follow rigorous guidelines. There are many factors that can alter the effectiveness of waterproofing products including, for example, a degraded membrane. Household detergents will also hinder the performance of Nikwax proofing products as will fabric softeners and dirt so it’s important that a technical product is used to wash gear before proofing.”
