Women-only Learn to Ride Biking Festival

Written by Fiona March 14 2011

It’s great to see more campaigns aimed at getting women on their bikes. The latest is a Women-only “Learn to Ride” Biking Festival at Pollok Country Park in Glasgow on Sunday April 3.

Although I have seen a rise in the numbers of women out on their bikes in recent years there are still far more men on two wheels on the roads, mountain biking, commuting to work  and taking part in cycling events.

A lot of women will tell you that they do not feel confident on a bike on the road or off-road and so the Learn to Ride Biking festival could be a great first step.

The event is being organised by Mountain Biking in Scotland, Forestry Commission Scotland and backbone and is open to women of all ages and  experience.  The day will include a range of activities and information to encourage women to get involved, feel comfortable around bikes, get more information on accessing their local woodlands and starting their journey to become a life-long cyclist.

There will be local and national biking organisations around the park with stalls and stand space providing other activities and information.

* On this very topic, I have been asked to write an article about women and cycling for the next Cycling Scotland newsletter. I’ll blog the feature once it’s published.
