Kit review: Aqua Sphere Kayenne swim goggles
I don’t have a big head! Some might say that I do ( although I hope not!) but in actual fact and measurement terms, my head is on the girlie size of big. This is most likely because I am female (obviously) but even for a 5ft 9in women (or thereabouts) I still think my head is quite small. (Let’s not have any jokes about the brain size!). So why am I going on about my head size? Because the other day I was sent a pair of female-specific swimming goggles.
I wasn’t aware that swimming goggles came in women and men’s sizes. I knew about children’s goggles and I’d noticed that some adult goggles were lighter shades or glittery and, occasionally, pink but I hadn’t really paid much attention. I usually wear swimming goggles with a prescription lenses. (Not only do I have a small-ish head but I’m also very short sighted. No luck in the genes department, then!) Goggles with prescription lenses do not offer much in the way of choice and I have found success with a couple of brands but never have they been pink or women-specific.
I also wore – and liked – Zogg Predator goggles during my London Triathlon and after recommendation from a fellow triathlete, who is a bloke. So the Zoggs weren’t female-specific or pink, either. As you can imagine.
My test swim of the Aqua Sphere Kayenne Ladies Swimming Goggles
Firstly, I was immediately struck by how well the Aqua Sphere goggles fit against my face. They simply felt super snug and super suctioned. The suction wasn’t uncomfortably, just nice a snug. Not a single, tiny drop or molecule of water got through the seal and into the goggles, which is ace and exactly what you need when you’re swimming non-stop lengths!
The goggles have an ingenious one-touch buckle adjuster on the strap, too, which makes it very, very easy to get the fit perfectly correct. If you’re a regular swimmer you’ll know how vital it is to get the fit of your goggles not too tight – and not to loose.
I also like the curve of the goggle lenses and the way they wrap around the face. It’s claimed that these are great for vision and actually offer 70 degrees wider vision than traditional goggles. I can’t disagree! I wore the goggles with contact lenses and managed to see perfectly well in the pool.
Another claim of the Aqua Sphere Kayenne women’s goggles is “superior, low-drag hydrodynamic performance”. I’d like to say that I noticed this too, and that the goggles turned me into a super-fast freestyle swimmer but I’d be lying! This has nothing to do with the goggles, which do feel great in the water and do not create any noticeable drag, but they certainly didn’t turn me into Hannah Miley!
Other features of the Aqua Sphere Kayenne goggles include:
Anti-fog
My experience: They didn’t fog up in the pool when I tried them
Scratch-resistant lenses
My experience: I have not owned the goggles long enough to find out.
Comfortable, leak resistant seal
My experience: Definitely agree. The seal feels really soft and suctions nicely to the face. The goggles are really comfy because of this. No water got inside the goggles when swimming length after length after length.
Easy to use Quick-Fit™ one-touch buckles on strap
My experience: The straps is really easy to adjust to make smaller and bigger, even when you have the goggles on your head. (A small head or a bigger head!)
Conclusion: Good-vision, comfy, no-fiddle goggles and in a female-fit and colour range.
