The south coast has long been a popular spot for commercial fishing, but for the individual there’s an amazing combination of rivers, estuaries and lakes that add to the thrill of the deep sea chase. Load up your rods, lures, waders and baits and head to one of these fishing spots to land yourself a whopper!

Angling

From either a boat or the bank, there’s a variety of catch to be had along the breadth of the Dart Estuary. The further inland you head towards Dartmoor, the more likely you are to land salmon and trout. Meanwhile, Brixham Breakwater and the quieter, lesser known Elberry Cove close to the Broadsands Beach in Paignton are great spots for float fishing for dogfish, pollock, mackerel, flounder and bass.

Test your casting skills and put lines out directly from the beach. Strete Gate beach affords anglers a long stretch of sand so you can be sure to secure your own quiet spot. Here, you can expect to land bass, which are plentiful all year long but for a more varied catch, head a few miles south to Start Bay where you can fish for wrasse, bream, plaice and gernard. If you prefer to be closer to the hustle and bustle of the south coast seaside, then drop a line from either of the Babbacombe and Princess piers in Torquay and reel in mackerel, whiting, garfish, wrass, bass, red mullet and occasionally, cod.

Deep Sea Fishing

Book yourself on to a boat for a few hours or a full day and head out to see for a more challenging, and more exciting fishing experience. A number of operators offer great deals on trips along the coast, but for variety the Susie B from Lyme Regis is one of the best. You can expect to catch bass, cod, ray, conger eel and shark among many other species.
