Written by Fiona August 13 2013

It’s all about action right now as my guest bloggers suggest a range of ideas for great things to do in the outdoors. This blog encourages readers to head to the Lake District for adventure fun. The forests, mountains and, of course, the lakes attract thousands of people to the Lake District every year. And while some tourists come to relax and take in the scenery, others visit to enjoy the plethora of cafes, pubs and restaurants. Then there are those who crave a bit more adventure and excitement from their holiday.

If you’re an adrenaline junkie there is plenty to do in The Lakes. Take a look at the following activities and start planning your next adventure break.

Gorge walking

Gorge walking is a fantastic way to explore The Lakes while challenging your fitness and your nerve. This activity involves traversing dramatic gorges in whatever way you can. This could mean climbing, abseiling, canoeing or wild swimming.

Canoeing

If you are a fan of the water then perhaps you will choose to focus on canoeing in particular. And what better place to have a paddle than a national park named after its many beautiful bodies of water? Canadian canoes are great fun for pairs and kayaks are available for solo adventuring on the local lakes and rivers.

Climbing

If you have a head for heights then you might want to explore upwards and do some rock climbing in the Lake District. Langdale Valley, Coniston and Tilberthwaite are popular climbing hotpots and there are climbs for novices, amateurs and hardened pros alike.

Mountain biking

A lot of adventurous tourists pack their mountain bikes for a break in The Lakes. There are some thrilling downhill trails and off-road terrain options, offering adrenaline-pumping rides. Alternatively there are more sedate tracks for those wanting to have a steady cycle while taking in the sights.

Scrambling

Scrambling is a combination of fell walking and rock climbing, which gives you access to secluded spots not accessible to the average hiker. Test your mettle at Raven Cragg, Jack’s Rake or Whitestones and explore the rugged fells and breathtaking Lakeland.

Canoe sailing

With its many lakes you could take to the water and try out canoe sailing. This activity involves rafting two canoes together and hoisting a sail. You can do this on Coniston or Windermere and take in the scenery in peace as you are conveyed around using just the power of the wind.

If you yearn for adventure pack up your tent, hire a motorhome or hook up your caravan and head to The Lake District. There is no shortage of exciting activities to get stuck into, and you will struggle to find a more spectacular setting for your outdoor pursuits.
