The outdoors lover’s ultimate Italian lakes adventure

Written by Fiona March 24 2014

Have you thought about  Italy for an outdoors adventure holiday? For stunning and mixed landscapes, a wealth of things to do, rest and relaxation, the European country is a great place to head. The lakes are especially popular among outdoors fans.

The Italian lakes contain all of the best elements of the country . Here are two to explore:

Lake Garda

The largest lake in Italy is based in the north of the country. Although very popular, much of the area has remained untouched and is just waiting to test your stamina on a hike or cycling trip.

The north of the lake is surrounded by mountains that are sure to test even the most experienced climber and trekker. The forests are enchanting while the lake side itself, when the water allows for human access, makes not only a great location for exercise but offers incomparable views and photo opportunities.

When you’re looking for a break from the glorious nature, the northern part of the lake is home to several small towns and villages that are well accustomed to visitors from all over the world. Sirmione is particularly popular thanks to its historical origins, with the Scaliger castle dating from the 13th Century and the town’s connection to the Roman poet Catullus.

Lake Iseo

The often forgotten Lake Iseo is ideal for those looking for a truly Italian experience away from the usual influx of tourists and resulting modernisation. Lake Iseo is a reasonably small lake by the standards of, say, Lake Garda or Como, but that certainly doesn’t mean there’s less on offer.

The area is best travelled by bike as it will not only give you a chance to bring an active element to the holiday, but allows you to truly become one with the untouched countryside surrounding the water. The hills and mountains will pose a friendly challenge to those of most levels, making them perfect for the active family.

Dotted throughout the countryside are some of Northern Italy’s best vineyards, many of which are open for the public to enjoy. It’s nothing short of a glorious experience, travelling through the countryside on bike, stopping off for lunch and wine tasting in the stunning vineyards – the ultimate in relaxation.

There’s nowhere quite like Italy for an all-in-one holiday. The likes of Venice are located nearby to Lake Garda for those looking to explore the famous city, offering an enjoyable break to the quiet of the lake.

Meanwhile, history buffs will not only enjoy the cycling opportunities offered by Lake Iseo, but will also be given the chance to explore the medieval castles and monasteries that have been left fairly untouched that are interspersed within the countryside.
