Kit review: Mammut Rainspeed Jacket
A running jacket that fits nicely, feels super light and keeps the wind and rain out. I’ve tested the Mammut 201 Rainspeed Jacket.
Scotland has enjoyed a few great summers but there is always the chance of rain. If I’m honest, there is a chance of rain on pretty much every day of a Scottish summer! So, for runners, especially those who like to run long distance, a lightweight summer waterproof is one of those must-have items.
For shorter runs I usually just run in a t-shirt or baselayer and hope for the best. A little rain when you’re out for less than an hour is manageable. But rain when running for a few hours or heading higher into the hills and mountains will end up making your cold and miserable.
Mammut’s new Rainspeed jacket is a great solution. The featherlight fabric is created from Mammut’s 2.5-layer DRYtech® material, which they claim will offer keep out the rain and allow sweat to easily evaporate away from the skin. The jacket also has vents in the back area for increased breathability.
At 210g this is a very lightweight jacket and packs down into a very small space. This is perfect if you are looking for a rain jacket to stuff in a pocket or into a small space in a running rucksack. The jacket fits inside an inner pocket making it neat and small.
I like the shape of the women’s jacket, too. It has been nicely designed to fit our curves but it’s not to tight so it’s possible to fit a thin layer underneath when required. I also like the articulated elbows, adjustable hem and close-fitting hood. There is also a handy side pocket.
Most runners also look for jackets tat do not make to much noise when out on the tails. The Mammut fabric is non-rustling, so that’s another bonus.
Out on the trails the jacket does exactly as it says it will. It’s waterproof, breathable and very light weight. It acuatally feels as though you’re wearing a loose-fit baselayer rather than a jacket. Amazingly, too, the hood stays up when you’re running. This is always the case with running jackets.
If you are looking for a jacket to include on the kit list for adventure-style races this would be a good buy because it will not add to much weight to your pack yet will perform well in poor conditions.
The Mammut Rainspeed for women come sin sizes XS-XXL. There is a men’s version. The jackets are priced at rrp £155. For stockists see www.mammut.ch. On Amazon I have seen the jacket a £142.20.
