Exclusive: New climbing centre for Highlands
Climbers in Inverness and the Scottish Highlands will no doubt be intrigued to hear news of a potential new climbing centre.
For two years, Duncan McCallum (best known to many adventure fans as the co-presenter of BBC’s Adventure Show) has been quietly investigating the potential for developing a climbing centre worthy of Inverness and the wider region.
Over the last six months, alongside a small team, Duncan has been negotiating with the owners of a site on Stadium Road near the Inverness Marina.
This week he told me: “I am pleased to say that we find ourselves in position to progress with this exciting project. We have gained support in principle from the MCofS, HIE and UHI.
“We will be working with these groups to secure the necessary support in order that we can deliver a climbing and adventure sports facility for Inverness and the Highlands.”
As the plan progresses, Duncan hopes to bring the public details of the scope and scale of the project as the process allows.
He is also keen to hear from climbers about what they would like to see in the new Climb Inverness project.
Duncan said: “We have set up an Inverness Climb Facebook page and we will asking questions of climbers about wall usage etc so that we can build a clearer picture to strengthen our case for the facility.
“I hope that you will be willing to participate in this process and also help build the audience for this Facebook page so we can keep the climbing and mountaineering community in the loop.
“Spread the word and share this message to others.”
