Three MTB routes for beginners on Mallorca

Written by Fiona

April 20 2016

Mallorca is blessed with a long summer season and it attracts a great many cyclists looking for early season training.

Road cyclists flock to the island to enjoy smooth tarmac, numerous routes, both flatter and hillier, and to follow in the tyre marks of Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins, who revealed he likes to ride on the Spanish island.

Mallorca is also a popular destination for mountain bikers especially in the breath-taking Tramuntana mountain range, which were awarded World Heritage Status by UNESCO in 2011.

Generally, the rocky terrain of the island provides plenty of technical trails with a lot of obstacles. Thus, the island is well-loved by the intermediate and advanced mountain bikers.

Beginners often shy away from biking on the island, as they are unsure of their ability to cope with the island’s terrain.

But did you know there are some great routes for beginner mountain bikers? My guest writer Elina of Activity Fan reveals three top places for the less experienced mountain biker.

3 best beginner MTB routes on Mallorca

Sa Comuna and Bunyola

mtb1

Total distance: 20km (12.5 miles)

Elevation: 600m

Terrain: 100% off-road, loose soil

The area is mostly covered with pine and oak forests and provides a few great picnic locations with a view on Bay of Palma and Oriental Valley. There is also an opportunity to get water from the water tank half way through the ride.

Soller Valley and Balitax Valley

mtb2

Total distance: 25km (15.5 miles)

Elevation: 660m

Terrain: 90% off-road, 4×4 track, loose soil

This route goes through centuries-old olive tree groves. You will also pass by the famous farmhouse of Balitx d’Avall. Make sure to make a stop for a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice sold by locals in the valley (you will spot various signs advertising it).

Lluc and Lluc Monastery

mtb3

Total distance: 14km (9 miles)

Elevation: 450m

Terrain: 90% off-road, 4×4 track, loose soil and small pebbles

This route starts at the picnic area and a car park close to the monastery that you will need to drive to by car. From there you head straight to Lluc. After exploring the monastery, you bike towards Banifaldo around Moleta de Binifaldo, an 837m tall mountain. The route brings you straight back to the car park.
