I confess I am not a huge fan of sausages. I always worry about what has been added to them in the manufacturing process. I know there are good quality sausages out there but for some reason I’ve never been keen.
It is not a huge loss to avoid eating sausages but when I was offered the chance to try sausages that are free from gluten, wheat, dairy and allergens, I could see no reason not to!
debbie&andrew’s have created a new range of Clean & Lean sausages, including a chicken sausage and a pork sausage.
Clean & Lean High Protein Chicken Sausages
These Clean & Lean sausages contain 23g of protein and just 142 calories and 1.8 carbohydrates per serving. They are free of allergens, sulphites, gluten, wheat and dairy. Additions include a touch of smoked sea salt and black pepper.
Clean & Lean High Protein Pork Sausages
The sausages include super-lean pork and deliver 25g of protein per serving and as well as being free from allergens or gluten, wheat and dairy ingredients they have reduced fat compared to other sausages. Each sausage as 1.3g of carbohydrates and 234 calories.
On test: Clean & Lean chicken sausages
The G-Force and I had the sausages for tea last night, along with a big green salad, plus feta cheese and olives.
As we cooked them, fried in a little olive oil in a non-stick pan, we both wondered why we had not simply chosen to cook chicken pieces rather than chicken in sausages.
However, it was good to see, like chicken pieces and fillets, there was no fat residue as we cooked.
The sausages browned really well on the outside and then we sliced them in half to cook them in the middle. We both like our sausages to be quite well done and browned all over.
The sausages kept their shape and plumped up a little with cooking. They looked like a good sausage, if you know what I mean?!
The test was really in the tasting, though. We both liked them a lot. The sausages are succulent and firm and super tasty. I am not sure I’ve ever had a chicken sausage but I would recommend them.
There was no gristle or extra bits just a nice, smooth chicken sausage. They tasted much nicer than plain chicken (I am bit bored of plain chicken) and I can see from the ingredients list there are a few more extras that the front of the packing reveals.
This is the full list of ingredients: Chicken (93%), Gluten Free Crumb (Rice Flour, Gram Flour, Maize Starch, Salt, Dextrose), Vinegar Powder, Ground Spices (Paprika, Black Pepper, Coriander, White Pepper, Mace, Nutmeg), Garlic Powder, Yeast Extract, Smoke Flavouring. Filled into beef collagen casings.
Still, if you are looking for a healthy sausage and a quick meal that is high in protein and relatively low in fat and carbs, they are worth a try.
debbie&andrew’s sausages are available through Amazon Fresh, Asda, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury’s and Tesco – priced between £2 and £3.50 www.debbieandandrews.co.uk/stockists. Also see debbie&andrew’s for more info.
