The old jail was falling to ruin and was seized by the Government in 1972 in an attempt to turn it around – and they succeeded. It still possesses many of the artefacts from its days as a penitentiary, including cell bars, yet the hotel is very sleek and stylish. If you like your hotels a bit more no-frills than luxury, this will be the one for you. Situated in Ottensheim, you will get the pleasure of staying in a refurbished sewage pipe that has just enough space for a bed and a lamp. Although you will be staying in a former waste pipeline, there actually isn’t enough space for a toilet… luckily, they’re located nearby.
Mountain Cabin, Italy

I have good news and bad news about this one. Good news: It’s completely free to stay in this cabin and it sleeps eight. Bad news: It’s located atop Italy’s Foronon Buinz mountain (that’s 8300ft) that you’ll have to scale it to get there. This mountaintop cabin was constructed by rescue volunteers in just the one day in honour of a fallen climber to give other mountaineers a safe haven to stay.
