Osprey travel bag: New Rolling Transporter

I am a big fan of Osprey packs and I was very happy to review this new travel bag on wheels.

On test: Osprey travel bag: Rolling Transporter

I have been testing the 90l Transporter. It is 80cm by 44cm x 35cm. I know that if I was to own the 120l I would simply take too much kit away with me. The 90l has been ideal for trips such as an extended ski break to British Columbia.

Long ago, I always took a rucksack as my travel bag but I have since come to love the bags on wheels. They are far easier to move around in airports and when you reach your destination. They save my back from being aggravated by the lifting on and off of the pack and they are easier to pack and access items when you are on holiday.

The 90l is a good size for an active holiday of a week or more. I was able to fit in most of my clothing and equipment for a skiing holiday, aside form the skis! So, as well as my ski clothing, I added a ski helmet, snow shovel and probe, ski poles, ski boots, cold weather boots and general bits and pieces. It all went in easily.

The zips have easy-to-grip zipper ends and you can open the bag on the top on three sides.  There is the additional security of clips around the zip to ensure the bag stays shut. I admit I rarely use a padlock to close a travel pack but it’s possible to do so if you want to.

If you have less kit there is an internal compression system – basically adjustable straps and clips – to stop things moving around.

The added mesh pockets inside were useful for stowing smaller its and prices and the “stash” pocket is where I put items that I want to be more easily at hand, such as a buff, gloves, extra baselayer.

The durable and waterproof fabric is superb. It looks like this bag is made to last a long time. This is good news since these bags are not cheap. I have to say, however, that all Osprey packs that I own are still going strong. They are high quality and very well made so the cost doesn’t seem so bad.

I also have the blue bag and that makes it very easy to find on a luggage belt.

The bag rolls easily and sits nicely upright, even when full. The handle is easy to extend and retract. The four grab handles are big and strong. The bag is very easy to move about.

There is also a clever wee addition that I have called the “double-up attachment strap”. I had to ask Osprey what the small strap and clip was for. It is hidden behind a velco sealed pocket at the top of the bag. Apparently it’s for attaching two bags together, one behind the other, so you can pull multiple gad along together. Now that is clever!

I also recommend the Osprey Transporter duffle bag is you want a pack without wheels and the Osprey Shuttle 100 if you want a slightly larger pack on wheels, although it does not feature the waterproof fabric of the Rolling Transporter.

It’s another great bag to add to the Osprey collection.
