Heading off into the wilds, even in the UK, for a few days or a few weeks requires a range of skills, as well as tools. From basic essentials, such as food and water to the tools required to cook and save your life in an emergency.
If you are an outdoor enthusiast, your kit list should include the most reliable things that will help you to survive in case of unexpected troubles.
Food and water
While humans have been known to survive for weeks without food, it’s better not to go without food for too long. You need energy to walk, run or cycle through the countryside.
However, you don’t want to take your entire fridge on a camping trip if you want to maintain a steady pace.
If you are not planning to hunt or fish for your own food, you should pack lightweight and easy-to-carry camp food (there are plenty of options in outdoor stores or create your own meals from pasta and couscous, for example), plus a few high-calorie protein bars and snacks.
Water is essential. Take what you can comfortably carry and then refill from reliable water sources. A mini water filter or bottle filter system helps if you run out of water during the trip and you are unsure about the quality of the water.
Lighter
Being able to start a fire is important when you’re out in the wild. Aside from the fact that you can cook with it, fire can keep you warm during the cold nights and ward off potential predators (if you are overseas).
You don’t have to start a fire by rubbing two stones together. All you need are a handy flash Zippo lighter and some flammable items, such as wax-covered cotton balls, and you can get your fire going.
Whistle and flashlight
It’s important to be being able to signal for help if you end up in an emergency situation. Take a whistle and know how to signal for help with a flashlight at night.
Knife
A knife may be the most multitasking item you’ll definitely need in your outdoor survival kit. A sturdy knife can help you accomplish so many things in the wild, such as preparing food, building a shelter and starting campfires.
Carbon fibre knives, in particular, are some of the most durable knives that many outdoor junkies always carry since they are lightweight and durable. That makes them stand out from regular knives. When push comes to shove, you’ll be thankful you’ve brought this one item with you.
First aid kit
The wild can be harsh no matter how careful you are, which is why you should always include a first aid kit in your outdoor survival items. Medical emergencies should not be taken lightly, so you should bring more than just a couple of Band-Aids. Include some Quick Clot for serious bleeding, needle and thread, tweezers and an antibiotic cream to prevent infection.
Always be ready
Nothing should stop you from exploring the world but do remember to always prepare for the worst and hope that it never comes.
