How to find your inspiration while travelling as a creative writer

Being a creative writer can be a rewarding endeavour. With the power of imagination, creative writers can bring new worlds to life and create characters that readers empathise with. Just take a look at J.D. Barker and all he had achieved as an author of thrilling and enticing books.

However, even the best creative writers can fall victim to writer’s block. Don’t despair, though! This loss of inspiration is only temporary – and there are plenty of things that can be done to get it back. One of the best ways to find new motivation is to broaden your horizons and look for inspiration through travel.

Try new things

One thing that writers will have the chance to do when they travel is to experience new things. Maybe they’ll go on a wildlife tour, or perhaps they’ll see a famous art museum. These new experiences are a great way to get the creative juices flowing and inspire a writer.

It is because these new things open your mind to new ideas. When you try new things you might not have thought of before, you can write about those ideas that you might not have thought of previously.

Write directly after an adventure

Dedicate time to writing after seeing and experiencing something new. Nadia and Mike from Couple Travel The World find it easier to write directly after an adventure. Your brain is stimulated after seeing and experiencing new environments, so it is no real shock that the brain becomes a lot more creative directly after a new adventure.

While you may be tired after a long hike or safari, if you manage to dedicate come time to your creative piece before you go to bed at night, you’ll find you are a lot more creative than first thing in the morning – being refreshed isn’t always a good thing!

Meet new people

While you are travelling, take the time to talk to the people you meet. It is a great way to open your eyes to different ways of thinking. This refreshing thought process can make its way through your pen the next time you write.

Writers can even talk to others about any ideas they may have for a story. Whether this is through a new friend they met on their travels or through consultation with the UK academic writing services, bouncing ideas off of someone else can help move the writing process forward.

Write somewhere new

This might sound rather simple, but one of the best things you can do on your travels is just to try to write while you’re at your destination.

Many writers work at a desk when they write – usually a specific counter maybe with a trip to the library or office. This consistent environment is easy, but it can be mind-numbing after a while. After all, staring at the same four walls day in, day out doesn’t offer a lot of inspiration for a writer.

So, while you are travelling, you should take the time to write in a new environment. Don’t just write in your hotel room, though. Bring your laptop or tablet to a new place. Maybe a cafe you just found or even a park to try and gain inspiration from your surroundings.

Don’t write

Finally, there is what might seem the oddest tip here. While you’re travelling, just don’t write. As you experience new things and meet new people, take the time to soak it all in. Don’t force yourself to turn it into content right away.

There’s nothing that will kill inspiration as much as trying to force it. Sometimes the best way to find inspiration as a writer is to let it come to you rather than chasing it down. As such, try taking this time just to enjoy your vacation and go back to the writing later with a refreshed mind.

Final thoughts on creative writing

Writer’s block can be the bane of any writer’s existence. It doesn’t, however, mean the end of a person’s life as a writer. Instead, it merely says that the writer must take steps to find their creative muse once more – maybe even in something new. As you travel, you will learn and experience a lot along the way. Make sure you don’t take this for granted and use your travels to find your inspiration once more.
