Get set for fun and games at Scotland’s outdoors show 2020

Visitors to the Scottish Cycling, Running and Outdoor Pursuits Show (SCROPS) at Glasgow’s SEC can look forward to even more active entertainment this year. In fact, people of all ages are encouraged to turn up on the weekend of February 29 and March 1 dressed in sporty kit so that they can make the most of a range of interactive challenges and sports competitions.

It is the active stalls and zones that I most enjoy at SCROPS, especially the indoor running, cycling and mountain bike tracks. In previous years, I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to try out professional starter blocks and learn tips about my running technique from the experts.

Maybe you will give the 40m Sprint Challenger your best go this year? Don’t forget your favourite trainers if you plan to do so.

One year, I took a beautiful looking demo bike for a spin, just to see how it felt to ride. it felt good, if you want to know, and I would never have gained the opportunity to ride the bike unless I had been at the show.

In 2020, there will be 2000 square metres of track dedicated to bikes. Look out for the Turbo Challenger, too, which is always a favourite, as well as the Segway Challenge (they look tricky, but they are really easy to use).

Check out the Aftershokz Marathon Challenge, too. Run a mile in the mystery time for your chance to win an amazing prize at the show. It’s simple because all you have to do is run the mile.

The WrightSport Triathlon Challenge is another great concept, especially as many of my friends at Glasgow Triathlon Club will be there trying to win the prize for travelling the furthest distance on a stationary bike and treadmill (that’s after they have been exhausted by the seven-minute swim in the Endless Training Pool).

If you want to try the WrightSport Triathlon Challenge you should sign up as early as you can because it is a popular event. If the Triathlon Challenge is fully booked, head along to the Dry Tri Challenge instead.

The Kids’ Active and Bike Zones are always busy as well.

This year there are a couple of new active additions:

An innovative Adidas Rotating Climbing Wall is suitable for all abilities, from kids to professional climbers. The rotating climbing wall increases coordination, balance and endurance and because the wall remains close to the ground, there is no need for ropes or harnesses yet it provides an authentic climbing experience.

CalMac Stand Up Paddleboard activity. Try the fast-growing sport of SUP in the safety and warmth of an indoor pool at SCROPS. This feature is suitable for anyone aged 12 or over who is game for testing their balance skills and who perhaps doesn’t mind getting a bit wet if they fall off.

Jet 2 Watt Bike Challenge Competition. Watt bikes are effective indoor trainers and no doubt the competition will be fierce among visitors for the show’s top prizes. My tip is to wear padded cycling shorts if you plan to take part in this activity.

Great speakers at SCROPS

Show organisers PSP Media Ltd are lining up another great list of speakers. Visitors can pop along to the Show Theatre, where a range of industry leading professionals and athletes will be talking about their specialist sports and providing valuable tips and insights on how to perform at your best.

It is a great way to become inspired about your chosen sport or a new pursuit. We all need new challenges at the start of the year, don’t we?

I am looking forward to seeing the line-up of guest speakers and celebrities.

Lots to see and plenty of friends to meet!

Brands, companies and stalls

The other part of SCROPS that appeals to me is wandering around the hall of stalls. I usually bump into plenty of people that I know, so I can have a chat with them as I stroll about.

I like to find out about new products, innovations and ideas – and there are always lots of freebies to pick up. I fuelled several big mountain walks thanks to the energy products picked up at one year’s show! Take a look at the exhibitors coming to SCROPS 2020.

Organisers report that the show will be the biggest and best yet. I don’t doubt it. It’s well worth a trip to Glasgow form wherever you live because there is plenty to keep you entertained for the day.
