Europe is a great place to explore especially when you’re backpacking or hiking. And while you can easily go and explore without any plans, making a few plans for your adventure before go will mean you see a lot more and have a lot more fun.

So, what are the best countries to visit on your backpacking trip to Europe?

Bulgaria

Bulgaria is one of the most underrated and beautiful destinations in Europe. There are plenty of destinations worth visiting, such as the capital city of Sofia; the small but beautiful city of Veliko Tarnovo; and their sea capital Varna.

But while all these offer hidden gems for the city lovers, what truly stands out in Bulgaria is its wild mountains and hidden monasteries.

From day one you’ve got a lot to explore. Nearly every major city has pathways in the wilderness to explore.

Other notable attractions to visit include the Buzludzha monastery, the Belogradchik Rocks, the Rila Monastery and The God of Eyes, which is a rock formation like none other.

Romania

Romania is famous as being the home of the fictional character, Dracula, as well as numerous lavish castles dating from the 1800s that are perfect for exploring.

You could start your trip to Romania in Bucharest. One of the capital’s biggest wow-factors is a miniature Champs-Elysées, modelled on the original in Paris.

Going off-grid reveals more hidden gems, including Bran Castle, the Bigar waterfall, Decebal’s head (a large hard carving) and all of Transylvania. Visiting the famous area gives you a feeling you can’t find anywhere else.

Mt Olympus.

Greece

Greece is a summertime gem. The history and charm of this country make it a great place to visit.

There are numerous attractions to see on the mainland and many islands. The Acropolis is one of the most famous. The monument looks over Athens and it is a must visit if you are interested in ancient architecture. You can freely walk around the monument and enjoy the Parthenon and the surrounding area.

Another great thing to do in Greece is to climb Mount Olympus, also known as the mountain of the gods.

The Amalfi Coast.

Southern Italy

Southern Italy boasts some of the most beautiful, scenic places in Europe.  The town of Lecce is one of the most historically rich cities in Italy, even being called the Florence of the south. With its gorgeous squares, Piazza del Duomo and Piazza Sant’Oronzo.

And if you’re looking for a bit of sand and want to hit the beach, then the Amalfi Coast is definitely the place you want to visit.

Europe is one of the most history-rich continents, and that’s what makes it such a sought after destination. The numerous different nationalities and cultures make Europe a continent that truly has to offer something different every day.

Now all you need to do is book your trip and pack your rucksack.
