Kit review: Nordic Oil for athletes

Written by Fiona

Have you heard about Nordic Oil? No, nor had I until I was sent some to try. I am also not the biggest fan of regular supplements but I thought I’d have a look into this one. After all, the ambassador names are impressive, including:

Dr Tamsin Lewis (IRONMAN UK Champion 2014)

Eimear Mullan (IRONMAN 70.3 UK Champion 2014)

Dan Halksworth (IRONMAN UK Champion 2014)

Mimi Anderson (Ultra Marathon and multiple world record holder)

Lucy Gossage (Cancer Doctor and IRONMAN UK and Wales Champion 2013)

What is Nordic Oil?

Founded in 2010 because of a perceived lack of good quality, lower cost omega 3 products, Nordic Oil offers a range of products using “carefully selected fish sources from deep, clear waters”.

In addition, Nordic Oil says: “Production takes place at state-of-the-art facilities in Northern Europe, where the oils are refined, filtered and distilled to ensure the seal of excellence.

“To maintain the highest standards at Nordic Oil, we also carry out rigorous third party testing across our entire range, which means that we can say with confidence that we really do offer the very best products.”

Why do we need Omega 3s?

Omega-3s are essential fatty acids and we need them for our bodies to work properly. One of their most important benefits is that they seem to have an anti-inflammatory effect.

A lot of diseases, such as heart disease and arthritis, seem to be related to an inflammatory process, so Omega-3s are thought to help with reducing the body’s inflammation, and that may be how they help prevent some of these chronic diseases.

For athletes, it’s suggested that Omega 3s can help in several ways:

  • To aid with faster recovery
  • Reduce muscle soreness
  • Burn fat while also slowing muscle loss.

There are two schools of thought on Omega 3 supplements. Some people say that a healthy diet, especially if we eat oily fish, is more than sufficient in Omega 3. Others recommend that we keep our levels of Omega 3 up, especially if you’re a non-fish eater or a keen athlete, with Omega 3 capsules.

Why take Nordic Oil?

Nordic Oil is acclaimed as high-grade fish oil. The capsules also include Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, which if you live in the UK can be in low supply in the winter months. Vit D is required for healthy bones, joints and muscles.

Omega 3 supplements are meant to be a “top up” supplement and they appear to be the latest big thing for athletes. It’s claimed that two capsules a day helps to keep the immune system healthy and combats the wear and tear of hard training.

Nordic Oil is liked by those that take it because it doesn’t have any nasty fishy after tastes and the capsules are easy to swallow.

My thoughts on Nordic Oil

I am not one for taking supplements as a rule. I eat fish every week and I go outside in the daylight throughout the year so I think that my vitamin D levels are probably ok. However, there didn’t seem to be any harm in taking the Nordic Oil Supplements.

They are easy to swallow and they do not taste of anything. This is good if you have any memories of cod liver oil! The capsules do not give off any odour in the tub.

I have taken them for a month and, of course, I have no idea if I would have stayed healthy or not without the supplements but I feel as though I have avoided many of the colds and bugs that have been going round.

While the rest of the family has coughed and snivelled I’ve not suffered with any illness. I have also been training every day and have started running again after almost a year of not running, due to stomach problems, and I have been surprised by how little my muscles have ached.

This could also be because I have run short distances and slowly built up the mileage and speed. Or, it could be because of the Nordic Oil supplements. Who knows?

There are plenty of people who swear by Nordic Oil for tip top health, especially some very impressive athletes.

You can buy Nordic Oil as a 500ml bottle for £26.99 or as capsules (60) for £9.99 or with added Vitamin D for £12.50. So it’s around £12.50 for a month’s supply, which seems reasonable. I have seen general omega 3 capsules with cheaper and far more expensive prices tags. However, Nordic Oil does emphasise that its oil is of very high quality.

If you feel the need to take omega 3 supplements it wouldn’t break the bank to give it a try for a month.

See Nordic Oil.
