Travelling is one of life’s great joys and gives you the opportunity to get out of your daily routine, relax, have fun and learn about new cultures and locations. However, one of the more tedious aspects of a trip can be the actual travelling between point A to B.
Whether you are off on a family holiday or taking a road trip with a group of friends, having a few game ideas to play along the way can help make your journey more enjoyable. Here are just a few games to try out:
21 Questions
First up is 21 Questions, this is a good old fashioned game ideal for car journeys as it requires no special equipment. If you have not yet played the game don’t worry, the rules are pretty simple.
The first player must begin by thinking of something, such as a species of animal, a food or something else. They keep this to themselves and the other players must ask them questions to try and figure out what it is they are thinking of.
The first player can only answer “yes” or “no”, even though it can be tempting to try and give away some clues when the other player’s guesses are close to the answer.
Mobile games
Playing games with others isn’t always possible, perhaps you are on a train or coach journey by yourself or perhaps your other passengers are asleep or concentrating on the road. This can be a good opportunity to enjoy some games on your mobile phone.
Take a look at some of the recommended games in the app store before you go and download a few to play, you can also play games within the phone’s web browser. If you are someone that enjoys the thrill of competitive games, you may enjoy Online casino games such as poker and blackjack.
There are also fast paced, simple casino games such as slots that are perfect for killing some time on long journeys.
Just don’t forget to charge up your device before you go or bring a charging cable that can be plugged into your vehicle.
Alphabet categories
Another nice simple game is alphabet categories. Everyone travelling with you can participate in this one, although it works best with around two to four players.
Firstly, the players must decide on what category they want to play with, this could be food, sports teams, bands, breeds of dogs, anything you like. Then each player must give an example of something in that category beginning with the letter in the alphabet, beginning with A and working all the way down to Z.
Guess the song
Guess the song is the ideal game for music lovers. All you need is a playlist of songs or a radio station that doesn’t announce song titles at the beginning of the track. The lead player will play a song and the others will try to get what the name and singer of each song is, the first to guess wins a point.
I spy…
I spy is another classic travelling game and is great if you are travelling somewhere with varied scenery. The concept of the game is simple, with the first player picking an object they can see and tell the other players the first letter.
The other players will then make guesses until one of them is correct, for example for the letter “T” they might guess, “Truck, Tree, Tyre, etc.”
At the start of the game, the lead player will begin with the old saying: “I spy with my little eye, something beginning with…”
Would you rather?
“Would you rather?” is a fun and sometimes silly game that encourages you to really use your imagination. A player will give the other players two scenarios and they must pick the one they find most agreeable.
For example, one “would you rather” could be whether they would prefer to climb a mountain or swim across a loch. Each player will take it in turns to be the question maker. There are no winners of this game but it can be really good for a laugh.
6 degrees of separation
6 degrees of separation is a more challenging game where players work together to find how two people know one another in six connections or less. This game is usually played using the names of famous people, such as actors.
One version of the game is “6 degrees of Kevin Bacon” and in this version players must choose an actor and try to connect them to Kevin Bacon by thinking of films that they were both cast in.
Battle of the bands
Battle of the bands is another game for music lovers. In this game, the player must give a song category such as “musicals” or “love songs” and the contestants then have 60 seconds to think of a song to play in that category. The judge must then decide which one is best.
