On test: Salomon Sense Ride 5 trail running shoe
I was set a pair of men’s shoes to test so I gave them to my friend Stew to put them through their paces.
He has run in the Salomon Sense Ride 5 trail running shoe on gravel paths, dry trails, mud and in the hills and mountains. Stew found the shoes were best for gravel and dry trails and not so good where the terrain is muddy.
Other positives of the Sense Ride 5 include “good build quality” and “very comfortable straight out the box”. Stew recommends people go up half size up because he felt they size a bit small.
Stew really likes the Salomon Quicklace system, although he knows others who do not. He found the lacing system keeps his feet well supported throughout his running routes, whether uphill, downhill or on the flat.
Stew says: “I would give the shoes a four out of five rating. They are great at what they are meant to do and that is to offer good comfort on trails and paths.
“I found that when I took the shoes for a run in the Scottish mountains they did not offer enough protection from the cold or natural obstacles and abrasions, such as rocks. The soles are also not grippy in the mud but good for trails, whether dry or wet.
“But, I guess these shoes are not meant for the mountains even though they still did pretty well.
“A major negative is the colour of the shoes because they do not stay clean even after first run.
“I have also found that my other Salomon shoe soles tend to wear out before the uppers so only time will tell with these Sense Ride 5s.
“Overall, these shoes are great for gravel trails and paths and I have enjoyed running shorter and longer distances in them. I like Salomon trail running shoes and I find them comfortable.”
