A new Golspie Backyard Ultra Marathon takes place on November 4, 2023. Golspie is a village in Sutherland, north Scotland.
Runners in the backyard ultra must complete a loop of 4 mile, 880ft (ie 4.167 miles) within an hour, or they are timed out. Every runner must start on the hour, each hour, until they can run no further or they are timed out.
The race starts at 10am sharp and continues until the final person is still running.
Rules dictate there can be no runner support and no use of poles.
The new Golspie event is keen to hear from volunteers who can help with the challenge.
There are 100 spaces (80 left currently) and a cost of £50 to enter. All money after expenses will go to Highlands and Islands blood bikes.
To enter, you can email: [email protected] for application or join the Facebook group.
What is a backyard ultra?
The roots of the backyard ultra are the desire to host a fun event with limited space and resources. There are now many Backyard Ultras worldwide.
The aim is to chase your own personal goals. You need to run a set distance – 4 miles and 880ft – each hour and every hour for 12 or 24 hours. Each participant has to be at the start on the hour ,every hour until they decide enough is enough or they time out on the course. There is a 3, 2, 1 minute warning before each lap starts.
