Packing for a winter staycation in the UK requires a balance of practicality and comfort. The UK’s winter weather can be unpredictable, with temperatures ranging from chilly to very cold and with a mix of rain, snow, and wind.

With this in mind, here is a guide to ensure you have everything you need to pack for cosy and enjoyable Christmas breaks UK.

1. Warm clothing

Top of your packing list should be warm clothing. Start with a good quality winter jacket and ideally one that is waterproof and windproof. You should think about an insulated jacket, too, such as a down or synthetic insulated layer.

Underneath, layer up with thermal tops, and a fleece or woollen jumper. Layering is essential because it allows you to adjust your clothing to the indoor heating and outdoor chill.

Don’t forget to pack a few pairs of thermal leggings to wear under your trousers. If you’re planning outdoor activities, comfortable trousers and water[proof over-trousers are a good idea.

2. Footwear

Your choice of footwear can make or break your staycation, especially if you plan to spend time outdoors.

Sturdy, waterproof boots with good grip are a must. They will keep your feet warm and dry, whether you’re walking through a city, exploring the countryside, or navigating snow. Pack some thick socks to keep your feet warm, and consider bringing a few extra pairs if they get wet.

3. Accessories

Winter accessories are essential. A warm hat, gloves and scarf will protect you from the cold and wind.

A beanie hat is ideal for keeping your head and ears warm, while gloves – preferably waterproof – will keep your hands toasty. A chunky scarf will not only keep your neck warm but can also be used to cover your face in particularly cold conditions.

4. Indoor comfort

Given that it’s a winter staycation, you will probably spend a fair amount of time indoors. Pack some cosy loungewear, like fleece-lined joggers, hoodies, or a soft robe. Thick socks or slippers are great for walking around your accommodation.

If your stay includes a fireplace, consider bringing a good book or a knitting project to enjoy by the fire.

5. Toiletries and skincare

Winter weather can be harsh on the skin, so pack a good moisturiser for your face and hands. Lip balm is essential to prevent chapping. If you’re planning on spending time outside, sunscreen with SPF protection is still necessary because the winter sun can sometimes be surprisingly strong.

Also, bring a few relaxing items, like bath salts or essential oils, to unwind after a day out in the cold.

6. Entertainment

While winter staycations are about relaxation, having some entertainment options is a good idea. Pack a couple of books, a journal, or a tablet loaded with movies and shows. Board games or card games are also great for cosy evenings indoors, especially if you’re staying with family or friends.

7. Food and drink

Consider packing some of your favourite winter treats. Hot chocolate mix, herbal teas and a bottle of your favourite wine or whisky will be welcomed on a winter staycation.

If you have access to a kitchen, think about preparing some easy-to-cook comfort food, like soup or stew, to enjoy during your stay.

8. Health essentials

Finally, don’t forget to pack a small first aid kit with essentials such as plasters, painkillers and any personal medication you might need. Given the season, you might also want to include cold and flu remedies, just in case.
