I was looking for a larger running vest pack for longer summer adventures and also for the Ultra Tour Monte Rosa. I likethe Salomon brand and I have owned other smaller packs before that are comfortable. I hoped the Review: Salomon Adv Skin 12 Running Vest (with flasks) would be just as comfy but with more space for carrying kit. Here is my thoughts after wearing the pack for lots of running miles recently.

My thoughts: Salomon Adv Skin 12 Running Vest (with flasks)
I have the size small and it fits really well over my shoulders and back. I need to cinch the chest sternum elastic quite a bit to fit my chest but the pack feels stable and supported. I like the vest style packs because they sit high on the back and do not move about when you run.
The elastic sternum adjustors are fairly easy to use although the clips are a bit small and fiddly if you are in a hurry or if you do not have great near sight. I need to make sure I am calm and concentrating rather than trying to do up the elastic system while on the move, or in a hurry.
I do prefer larger clips for the sternum adjustors but these Salomon clips – like small hooks – are adequate. You can tighten or loosen the elastic when it’s clipped on. The elastic is quite thin but it does work well – and surprisingly so.
There is space for two 500ml soft flasks at the front of the pack. This is really important for fluid intake on the move. There are also two zipped pockets over the top of the water bottle pockets and I thought they would be a bit pointless but, actually, the fabric is stretchy enough to allow me to stow a large iphone and other smaller items.
Space for two water bottles and an iphone at the front of the pack is very important to me and so the Salomon Adv Skin 12 Running Vest scores well.
The other front zipped pocket I use for snacks that I will want while on the move.
There is also a large main compartment with a wide zip. This is where I stuff most of my kit. I can fit in tons of stuff, including a waterproof jacket, waterproof over-trousers, lightweight insulated jacket, gloves, spare hat, food and extra fluids.
An open-topped inner pocket with a clip attachment, most likely for attaching keys safely, is a useful extra pocket, too.

In addition, there’s a stretchy open-sided pocket at the lower rear of the pack. This is useful for adding items that you need quick access to, such as a waterproof jacket, map, food etc.
A compression elastic system on both sides of the pack allows you to adjust the volume and size of the pack, depending on what you have inside.
There are two small elastic loops – also adjustable – at the rear and base of the back, which I use for carrying my folded running poles when I don’t want to use them. The poles sit quite neatly at the rear and base of the pack but I did occasionally knock my elbows on them when running. It might be better to use a Salomon quiver if you plan to mostly carry, not use, your running poles.
One thing the pack lacks is a larger stretchy pocket on the outside of the pack but higher up. This would not add much extra weight but it would be good for stashing extra bits and pieces and keeping items more organised. I do find that with this pack I am rummaging for things more than with other packs because there is one larger pocket and fewer extra smaller pockets.
Even with the pack fully loaded, I find it very comfortable. It sits well against my back and shoulders and doesn’t move about. I have not suffered any rubs or chafing, even when it’s a hot day and I am wearing only a running vest.
The back does get sweaty but this is standard for most of these types of running vests. The back mesh is lightly padded and seems to absorb my sweat, although I am not an overly sweaty person.
It’s also a bonus that you can a 2l bladder should you want to, as well as a custom quiver. I have friends who use a quiver for easier stowing of their poles and they are converts to this set up. I’ve not yet tried it as I tend to carry my poles at the base of this pack.
Overall, and for the price, this is a well designed pack that is comfortable to use and the ideal size for up to a day of summer hiking or running, or for an ultra distance race. It would be great to have a couple more stretchy pockets, or even one or two smaller zipped pockets, for keeping kit a bit more organised.
