Summits debate: The Fionas versus the Grahams

Scotlands mountain summits sit in traditional categories. The Munros are all Scottish summits of 3000ft (914.4m) height or more. There are 282 of them. The Corbetts number 222 and are 2500ft (762m) to 3000ft (914.4m). Then came the Grahams. The Grahams were created as a list by Alan Dawson and Fiona Torbet (maiden name Graham) and include summits of between 2000ft (609.6m) and 2500ft (762m), with a prominence of 150m.

The were originally named after Fiona’s maiden name. Fiona was sadly the victim of a murder some years later and since then Alan has proclaimed himself to be keeper of the Grahams.

The Fara.

Alan then proceeded to obtain a registered trademark on the use of the name Grahams. In more recent years, he has also redefined the Grahams in metric terms, as mountains between 600m and 762m. This means there are 12 more summits that are classed as Grahams by Alan.

Some people have dismissed the reclassification and are sticking to the traditional list, renamed by some as “Fionas”. For obvious reasons, I like the idea of bagging a list of mountains known as Fionas! There are 219 Fionas and 231 “new” Grahams.
