Marathon-a-day-for-a-year record breaker

Written by Fiona February 07 2011

As you’ll know if you follow my blog I love extraordinary outdoors and fitness stories. This one about a Belgian runner who has completed 365 marathon races in a year caught my attention this weekend. I can’t imagine how much this man’s body must have suffered to achieve this record-breaking feat but I am in awe of his true gritted determination. Having completed only one marathon ever I find it hard to comprehend the physical and mental resolve of this guy but isn’t it fantastic when someone achieves something truly mind blowing?!

Stefaan Engels has run a marathon every single day for a year and across seven countries. He began his epic challenge in Belgium and crossed the finish line in Barcelona, Spain, after running 15,000km (9,569 miles) in a year.

Even more amazing is the 49-year-old’s marathon times.  He averaged about four hours to complete a marathon and his PB was 2 hours and 56 minutes.

Added to this Engels suffered from asthma as a child and had been told by doctors to avoid sport. After completing the mind-boggling year of marathons he said: “I don’t regard my marathon year as torture. It is more like a regular job!”
