Two adventure athletes take on The Epic Triathlon

News of these guys’ epic triathlon challenge certainly puts my own multi-sporting days at Club La Santa into perspective! While I managed an hour’s swim, a two to five hour cycle and a yoga pratice (as well as he occasional run) most days of my recent holiday on the windy/sunny island of Lanzarote, Bruce Duncan and Anthony Emmet plan to run, cycle and kayak almost non-stop over 1064 miles for six and a half days. Their madness is to raise funds for charity – and to push their bodies to the extremes!
Next month, the two seasoned elite adventure racers are taking on The Epic Tri, amounting to a 65 mile run over 42 mountain tops, followed by 874 miles of almost non-stop tandem cycling and finishing with a 125-mile kayak race, in aid of Cancer Research.
The Epic Tri is a combination of three of the longest and toughest endurance challenges that the UK has to offer, with Duncan and Emmet tackling these in quick succession. The Epic Tri:
* Begins with The Bob Graham, a legendary 65 mile run over 42 mountain tops in the Lake District to be completed within 24 hours.
* Next up is 874 miles of cycling from John O’Groats to Lands End on a tandem in a target time of 60 hours.
* Finally there’s the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race, which ads up to a 125 mile and 77 portage kayak race, which the pair hope to finish in 24 hours.
This is a massive challenge and one that only the toughest of athletes can surely manage. I am in awe!
Duncan, who is three times winner of the Wenger Patagonian Expedition Race and winner of the 2010 Nokia Coast to Coast Adventure Challenge – Expert category, said: ‘The Epic Tri will be a huge undertaking, it will far outweigh any of the huge multisport adventure races we have done before but with a personal incentive we will push through the pain to raise as much as we can for Cancer Research”
Emmet has been competing in Adventure Racing for nearly 10 years and has achieved many top results. He was most recently 3rd in the adidasTERREX adventure race, and the Nokia Coast to Coast multisport race.
