‘Did I see a wolf in the Scottish mountains?’

Written by Fiona November 23 2011
"Is it a Scottish wolf?" she said!

"Is it a Scottish wolf?" she said!

This is a true story! (It was a PS tagged on to the end of my last blog but I think it’s funny enough on its own to merit a blog.) Walking in Glencoe the other weekend I had been doing my usual “counting up women”. For the first time I counted as many women walking as men. The tally reached nine when we met two Australian girls.

We stopped for a chat as they, too, remarked on the sight of me, “a woman in the mountains”. As we chatted one of the women suddenly stopped and pointed into the near distance. “Wow. Look at that over there. It’s huge. Is it a wolf?!” she said.
The look of amazement on our faces said it all – and she looked a little red-faced when we said it was, in fact, a mountain hare. Admittedly the colouring, with half summer and half winter fur, could have been wolf-like but the size wasn’t!
I asked permission to tell this story and the woman laughed and nodded her head.
