First bungee jumper leaps from Titan Crane

Written by Fiona June 22 2012

Alanna Jackson, dressed appropriately as a “bird of prey” , launched Scotland’s newest bungee jump site at the Titan Crane in Clydebank yesterday when she plummetted 150ft towards the Clyde.

Wearing an eagle outfit, Alanna, of Clydebank, became the first jumper to trial Highland Fling Bungee’s new site at the A-listed crane in Clydebank.

Bungee jumping will officially start at the site of the former John Brown’s shipyard this weekend (June 23 and 24) – and already both days have sold out!

The development is likely to attract many more adrenaline seekers in the coming months.

Jumper Alanna was raising awareness of the Loch Lomond Bird of Prey centre as she hurtled from the crane’s cantilever at 50mph towards the choppy water. Although the weather was extremely wet, she was thrilled by the leap.

She said: “This is the third time I have jumped with Highland Fling Bungee and it has always been an amazing experience. I did two jumps in Perthshire but you could tell this one is bigger. It was incredible!

“As well as having loads of fun, I was jumping to raise awareness of the Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre and all that they do there.

“It is a fantastic centre but doesn’t receive funding or grants from local authorities or government bodies so hopefully people coming to the area for bungee jumping will visit the Centre as well.”

VisitScotland chiefs have hailed the development which will enhance further Scotland’s reputation as Adventure capital of Europe.

Yesterday, Highland Fling Bungee launched its summer programme for the Titan Crane with dates penciled in up to September so far.

Director John Mason-Strang said: “When we opened Britain’s first permanent bridge bungee jump last year at Killiecrankie, Perthshire, we knew there was an appetite in Scotland for bungee.

“That has been proven with almost 6000 jumpers taking the plunge already, from five continents. Having this at a city site, and such an iconic one, will open up bungee jumping to the wider UK market, bringing a real spin-off for Scotland.”
