Give back to nature – and win a pair of KEEN sandals

Written by Fiona July 09 2012

Have you heard about the forthcoming Envirotrek? I really like the idea. Envirotrek gives people the opportunity to give something back to their environment while enjoying some fun in the great outdoors.

Envirotrek has been taking place at events across Europe since 2009, and this year the first British Envirotrek is launched at Bamford in the Peak District.

The event, sponsored by KEEN (of the iconic outdoor boots, shoes and sandals fame) is on August 5. Billed as the first UK Respect the Mountains Envirotrek Mountain Clean Up, everyone is invited to come along and give something back to their environment.

Popular mountain destinations are becoming increasingly in need of on-the-ground action to clear them of waste in order to maintain their natural beauty, and so preserve the enjoyment of these precious places for generations to come. Last year’s Envirotrek initiatives saw more than 500kg of rubbish cleared in 445 hours across four European Countries. Some of the more unusual items collected from their efforts included a US Army oil barrel from World War II.

Added to this KEEN are offering a pair of their new sandals, the Turia, to give away to one of my readers. Worth £80, I have a pair to give away. You only need to answer a simple question and then I’ll pick an name from a hat and KEEN will send the sandals out to you. There are male and female versions.

The Bamford Envirotrek day on August 5

The programme kicks off at 10am, with volunteers walking a track and clearing and collecting rubbish and waste. Group leaders are allocated and all participants will be provided with cleaning and safety equipment and fully briefed with a safety talk.  The clean-up finishes at around 12.30pm, with volunteers being rewarded for their mornings’ efforts with a BBQ lunch on the hillside.

Participants get to spend the remainder of the afternoon enjoying a range of fun outdoor pursuits organised by the Envirotrek leaders, including climbing, mountain biking, canyoning and caving. They’ll also be a chance to win some great prizes including KEEN footwear and gifts for the best or most interesting rubbish found on the hill. The day finishes at around 4pm.

You’ll need to register
To secure your place on this great community event register online at : www.keenfootwear.com/envirotrek  There’s an entrance fee of £9, which includes a goodie bag for all volunteers.

Wee word about the competition rules: Closing date is Friday July 13, 2012. Once a winner is chosen you will liaise with KEEN to have your size and gender of sandals sent out to you. Best of luck! You can email me your answer at [email protected] or enter by commenting on Facebook or tweeting. Friends and relatives will be treated just like my other followers!
