Helmet: Proven so many times to protect the head when involved in a cycling fall or accident, a helmet is considered by most people to be a must-wear cycling item. These days there are so many lightweight helmets on sale that wearing one doesn’t cause a lot of bother.

High Power Mini Pump: A small but perfectly formed bike pump that delivers a whole lot of air when you have been hit by an annoying puncture.

Front and back lights: Legally required on dark mornings and nights and a huge advantage if you want to be seen at any time of the days on the roads, a good front and back light is well worth owning.

Mirrors: We use our mirrors in the car so many times, so why not take advantage of the same product on your bike? Mirrors are very useful when cycling on busy roads and it means you do not need to turn your head to see behind you.

Bike Repair Kits:  You may not be an expert mechanic, but if you are a rider, you should keep a few important tools handy for emergencies. The tools should include tyre levers, spare inner tubes, puncture repair patches, Allen keys and a perhaps a pedal wrench.

Bike seat bag: A great place to keep your puncture repair kit and a few other essentials, such as a mobile phone. You can even buy a saddle bag just to house your precious camera.

Bottle and Bottle Cage: Hydration is vital for longer distance bike rides so make sure you have a bike cage fitted to your bike and a bottle filled with water when setting out.

Bike Lock: Few people would dare to leave their bike unlocked when heading into work or the shops. Choose your lock to give maximum security.

Waterproof jacket: It rains in the UK ­ – and you never know when a shower will hit – so make sure you have a waterproof jacket in your back pocket or rucksack.

Bike Computer: Well, perhaps this isn’t a vital cycling item, but it will help you to enjoy your cycling more. Bike computers offer speed, time, distance etc.
