If you’ve been watching the track cycling at Glasgow 2014, you’ll know what the Keirin race is. Well, you’ll have an idea anyway! The Keiran is a form of motor-paced cycle racing in which track cyclists sprint for victory following a speed-controlled start behind a motorised pacer.

Scottish track cyclist Sir Chris Hoy is a gold medal winner in this event, among many others.

Now the seven-times Olympic medal winner has teamed up with a Scottish independent bicycle manufacturer Shand to produce a bespoke hand-built HOY Keirin bike.

This collaboration is seen as a great Scottish partnership and a timely tribute to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Hoy represented Scotland at three Commonwealth Games, winning his first major Championship gold medal at Manchester in 2002. Sir Chris Hoy is also part of the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee as an ambassador for Glasgow 2014.

The HOY Keirin bike has been built as a one-off for Sir Chris after he met with Steven Shand in Edinburgh last year. The pair discussed at length their experience of Japanese Keirin racing and the specifics of the steel track bike, and so the idea to custom-build a unique HOY Keirin bike was born.

The tubing and geometry of the HOY Keirin bike was specified by Chris and the construction details are Shand’s expertise. The result is a bike worthy of bearing the gold and silver bands of Sir Chris Hoy’s career and maybe the start of more development in this area.
