Pre-season off-piste awareness session

Written by Fiona October 20 2014

Increasing numbers of skiers and snowboarders are keen to venture off-piste on mountains in Scotland (including my bloke, the G-Force!). But there are dangers (are you listening, G-Force?) to be very aware of when skiing or snowboarding back country. This also applies to mountain walkers and Munro baggers.

2Beacon625x378The best way to enjoy yourself and stay safe is to learn a few safety skills. At Snow Factor Braehead on Saturday, October 25, snow fans can attend an “Everything Backcountry” session organised by Prestwick-based Snow Rehab.

While there is little snow out in the Scottish mountains right now, there is fresh snow on the slopes of Scotland’s only indoor real snow destination, so it makes the perfect setting for the pre-season off-piste awareness workshop.

The session will include:

         Avalanche awareness training

         Backcountry skills coaching

         Equipment demos

         Seminars with industry professionals

         Ski touring tutorial

         Split board tutorial.

In addition to offering sound advice to enthusiasts planning an off-piste adventure this winter, budding instructors will have the chance to hear how Angus McLean-Wilson successfully gained the skills to become a qualified ski guide in Canada

Gordon Hodge, of Snow Rehab, said: “Backcountry safety is a topic close to our hearts here at Snow Rehab. Our overall goal is to inspire and educate the young and old, new and experienced, to safely go beyond the rope and into the backcountry.

“With the best brands in the industry and the most experienced mountain guides we’re confident the day (at Snow Factor) will provide the perfect platform to kick start your adventure into the backcountry.”

The Everything Backcountry starts at 10am on Saturday October 25. Please note that seminars are FREE to attend. A lift pass must be purchased for the on-slope activities.
