Official opening of Glasgow Wake Park

You might be forgiven for thinking that this is not “new” news but it’s official news! The cable wake boarding facility at Pinkston will be officially opened this week. Glasgow Wake Park is billed as Scotland’s first urban wake park (there is another wake park – a rural one! – in East Lothian called Foxlake Adventures) and on Friday (June 5) the Minister for Sport, Health Improvement and Mental Health, Jamie Hepburn MSP, will be at Pinkston Paddle Centre, Port Dundas Canal, Glasgow, to do the opening ceremony.

The new Glasgow Wake Park has been made possible thanks to Sportscotland funding (through the Active Places Legacy Fund 2014), Scottish Canals, Alan Murray, from Waterski Scotland, and Active Schools manager Sally Tait.

What is wakeboarding?

Wakeboarding is similar to snowboarding or skateboarding on water and has become the cool alternative to water-skiing. The cable system allows the wakeboarder to ride continuously by turning at each end of the basin.

The Urban Wake Park has four obstacles floating in the water that allow the rider to perform varying levels of tricks.

Neil McKenzie, of GWP, says: “Glasgow Wake Park is very excited to get officially underway. Our new wake park in the heart of Glasgow will provide a fantastic opportunity to introduce wakeboarding to thousands of new participants. We aim to grow the sport and provide an alternative way to get people active right in the middle of the city.”

Glasgow Wake Park shares facilities with Pinkston Watersports on the Forth & Clyde Canal at 75 North Canal Bank St, Glasgow, G4 9XP
