Scottish teenager wins world wakeboard champs

Edinburgh wakeboarder Blair Fraser has won gold in the WWA (World Wakeboard Association) Wakepark World Championships. The 17-year-old beat stiff competition in the in the Open Men’s Features contest in Abu Dhabi last week but clinched the prestigious title thanks to his impressive somersaults and and 900 degree wakeboarding spins – that’s two and a half revolutions!

Blair, who trains at Foxlake Adventures in Dunbar, said: “I headed out to Abu Dhabi feeling excited and confident but a bit nervous. Everything came together for me during the competition and I loved every bit of it.

“The experience in Abu Dhabi and competing at this level has been invaluable and an amazing, memorable experience. I’m now really looking forward to having a rest and then focusing on next year’s competitions.”

He added his thanks to everyone who has supported him. He said: “I am so grateful to everyone who has supported me in my training, including my mum and dad, my sister, the team at Foxlake Adventures, Glenalmond College for giving me the time to train and compete, and my equipment sponsors WaterSportsworld, Mystic and Hyperlite.

Blair also took home silver in the Junior Men’s Open competition for 14 to 18 years olds.

James Barbour, director of Foxlake Adventures, said “Huge congratulations to Blair for winning gold in the World Championships last week. Everyone in the team here who has supported him along the way, from the very first day he first started training at Foxlake three years ago, is bursting with pride for him.

“He has incredible skill and talent and is a great inspiration to other youngsters who have taken up the sport and watch him regularly train at the lake. Already we can see a few others destined to follow in his footsteps thanks to the support and encouragement he gives them.”

Blair’s 14-year-old sister, India, is also a top wakeboarder and is ranked number one for her age in the UK.
