New John Muir Way Ultra Marathon

Entries have opened for a new 50k ultra running event on the John Muir Way in East Lothian this April.

Foxlake Adventures, the company behind Scotland’s first cable wakeboarding park in Dunbar, is launching the ultra race after successfully hosting the Foxtrail Winner Running Series.

The 50k – 31 mile – race takes place on April 23, 2016, from Port Seton to Foxlake HQ. It is part of the inaugural John Muir Coast Festival weekend.

More than 100 places are open for solo runners in the ultra race. Teams of two can also participate running 25km each.

The route follows the waymarked long-distance trails, the John Muir Way, and takes in some of the Scottish east coast’s most stunning beaches, historic sites and attractions, including Longniddry Bents, Archerfield Walled Garden, North Berwick Law and John Muir Country Park.

The Foxtrail Winter Running Series is in its fourth year and comprises five trail runs from 10k to 20k. It has attracted more than 850 runners this year.

James Barbour, Foxlake director, said: “On the back of another hugely successful Foxtrail Winter Running Series, which has attracted a record number of runners this year, this seemed like the perfect time to organise an ultra marathon, which we’ve been talking about for the last couple of years.

“Never has there been a marathon starting and finishing in East Lothian let alone an ultra marathon, which is pretty exciting.

“Almost 50 people have already signed up, both new and experienced ultra runners and we expect more than 100 people to take part on the day.”

The John Muir Way Ultra Marathon will offer prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female winners.

John Whittaker, race director, said: “This is the ideal opportunity for people who fancy a step up in distance to an ultra-run. The John Muir Way Ultra is just a bit longer than a marathon and it follows mixed trails and footpaths along the coastline of East Lothian without any major changes in elevation.”

Anything else to know

Spectators waiting for runner at the finish line can try out cable wakeboarding at Foxlake, the Foxfall over-water, obstacle ropes course, inflatable ringo rides or take it easy at the award-winning café.

The John Muir Way Ultra Marathon is part of East Lothian Council’s John Muir Coast Festival, taking place throughout the weekend of the 23rd and 24th April. It includes a festival at Foxlake from noon to 10pm on the 23rd with music, food, stalls and a mini cinema.
