New Wee Eck Ultra run for Dunoon

The latest announcement of a new ultra running race comes from the Cowal Peninsula where Dunoon will host the Dunoon/Loch Eck 50k Ultra, nicknamed the Wee Eck.

The event, on Saturday October 8 is not really that “wee”, extending to 50k but in ultra terms it’s a relatively short outing.

The Loch Eck Ultra will start at the famous Benmore Botanic Gardens, some five miles from of Dunoon (a coach transfer from Dunoon is included).

The route initially heads south down “Puddle Lane” passing by Uig Hall and then climbs a spectacular gorge path through Pucks Glen. Runners will be treated to a “mixture of magical waterfalls and Jurassic-like fauna”.

Once on the forestry trail, runners head north climbing high above Loch Eck. The views are spectacular and especially at the ultra’s highest point of 335m above sea level. A welcoming two-mile descent takes runners to Glenbranter, passing the Sir Harry Lauder monument.

The route crosses the A815, passing the edge of Glenbranter village and returns south on the west side of Loch Eck. The path follows the loch shore closely and, thankfully, the trail becomes a bit flatter here.

Once back at Benmore Botanic Gardens, there are 20kms left. The route continues south towards Glenkin, where there’s another climb on forest trails towards Dunoon.

The views over the River Clyde should take your mind off the pain in your legs, before a 10k section descending through the natural woodland of Bishop’s Glen and eventually on to the final mile hugging the reservoir and eventually taking you down to the final 2km along the West Bay.

The race will finish on the newly refurbished and restored Dunoon pier.
