Waterproof clothing has come a long way since its beginnings centuries ago. Aleut American Indians would use seal or whale intestines to create waterproof jackets for hunting, while the Chinese used oiled silk in their umbrellas more 1000 years ago. In the 15th century, sailors found a solution through trial and error by experimenting with linseed oil, to help their sailcloth become water-resistant.
Methods have changed somewhat since then and there are far more modern ways to create element-repellent clothing. Since the first raincoat was manufactured in 1821, techniques of developing waterproof materials are much more technically advanced. Most waterproof clothing also includes ratings for breathability, durability and environmentally friendliness.
Wide range of waterproof fabrics
We’ve all heard of the waterproof membrane Gore-Tex but there are many others made by different brands such as HyVent, eVent, Sympate, Omni-Dry and Porelle. They are utilised in products such as jackets, trousers, hats, socks and gloves.
Waterproof accessories
There have been many advances in waterproofing accessories, such as hats, gloves and socks. Porelle is sometimes used to improve the performance of waterproof socks and waterproof gloves. Porelle membrane is essentially a waterproof breathable film that is incorporated into the clothing.
This hydrophilic and micro-porous innovation can deliver a waterproof layer that is temperature resistant and can absorb and remove water and sweat effectively.
Merino wool is often incorporated into such clothing to provide a high level of comfort. Utilising the natural properties of this particular material, scratching sensation so often associated with woolly clothing is reduced.
Merino wool is lighter than other sheep’s wool and has the ability to retain or diffuse heat where needed. This makes it a perfect addition to any waterproof clothing, especially for active wear as it is naturally antimicrobial too.

Modern waterproof clothing
Modern waterproof clothing is often made up of multiple layers, gaining the benefit of each. From the outer shell, to the interlining and inner lining, high performance is developed from the individual layers’ properties.
Innovative and unique techniques allow some companies to take numerous properties of materials and create a single fabric, therefore delivering a weatherproof product that is incredibly effective.
Benefits of waterproof technology
Weather-resistant clothing is convenient all year round, not just during the winter months. When you’re enjoying the outdoors, perhaps going for a leisurely walk or to enjoy a range outdoor sports, you’ll require protection from the elements to ensure you stay dry, warm and comfortable.
